Post-Surgical Pain

Pain sometimes linger long after surgical incisions have healed. It is not uncommon for patients to present with pain after thoracotomy, mastectomy and hernia surgery. Pain after open-heart surgey, C-section, joint replacement or even simple arthroscopy is also seen with regularity in a busy pain management practice. Possible causes are many and post-surgical scarring is almost always considered a contributing factor but finding the answer is not so easy. Keloid in some people predisposes them to develop pain in the scars. Treatments for various post-surgical pain are many, usually involving a combination of medications, physical therapy and cortisone injections and nerve blocks.
