Joint pain is commonly caused by either osteoarthritis (inflammation of a degenerated joint) or bursitis (inflammation of the joint lining). Rheumatoid arthritis, one of a number of autoimmune disorders, is less common. Treatments for different causes of joint pain are different. In almost all cases, once the acute episode is under control, physical activity to maintain range of motion and healthy bones and muscles is of importance.
Infection, gout and bleeding are less common causes of joint pain that require more immediate attention.
