PORTSMOUTH — While most people have heard of hospice, few really know how it works. Fewer still know that every American is entitled to hospice benefits through Medicare. As a result, only a small minority of Americans have executed advance health-care directives. This means that when a loved one approaches the end of life, most families are faced with difficult choices for which they are unprepared.
As America’s baby boomer population continues to age, end-of-life care — particularly hospice — will become an even more important part of the continuum of care. Unfortunately, many New Hampshire health-care organizations and senior living companies still don’t offer hospice.
