Celiac Plexus Block

Celiac plexus, or solar plexus, is a group of autonomic nerves in the abdomen that mediates certain visceral (abdominal) functions.  Most commonly, pain in the viscera is relayed through the celiac plexus to the brain.  Celiac plexus block is used to treat pain associated with either inflammation or cancer of the pancreas.  Alcohol or phenol blocks (neurolytic block) are usually effective in controlling the more severe pain related to cancer of the pancreas.
